What to send

The question, in a sentence or two, and what records exist: well files, permit applications, injection reports, production histories, an opposing report, or nothing yet. A note on timing helps, since proceedings run on schedules and the scope is easier to set when the deadline is known.

For a matter in litigation or a contested proceeding, include the names of the parties and counsel so a conflicts check can run before anything substantive is discussed. That check is the first thing that happens after your message arrives.

What happens next

A reply within two business days, then a call. If the question is one the practice can answer, a written scope follows with hours estimated by task and the deliverable defined before the analysis begins. If it isn't, the reply says so and, where possible, points to who could.
